Talking over with some people who collected Tipitip when first came out, there is a possibility that the first serie was 1-20, not 1-70. Of course they dont remember the exact numbers they collected but, they remember what they’ve got were not many different pictures at the time. To check this i showed tipitip 1-70 from my collection to a person. He recognized immediately some wrappers from 1-20, but none from 21-70 rang a bell.

Also i should mention that i dont know in other countries but here when small kids buy gums, they are only interested in the picture, not the numbers. As i mentioned before, kids here loved and impersonated tipitip very much, so all they cared was what tipitip was doing in that particular wrapper, not the numbers.

About four years ago in a second hand book shop the owner showed me some tipitip. I dont know where he got them but they were only 1-20. He woudn’t sell them to me though in spite of my insistence. I guess i could call this some typical Turkish shopowner behaviour, maybe i looked excited and he started thinking that he has some special things that he hasn't realized, so better keep it – and most probably later on sold it for less than what i offered, as Turkey does not exactly boil with gum collectors.

Some points for and against this argument :

-As we know Kent likes series of 1-70 sometimes. But again the 1-70 series started later pretty much with turbo. In other older day series (bibip, duldul) the series numbers were inconsistent.

-Tipitip was the first ‘wrapper‘ experiment in Turkey in 1974. It was cards until then. Kent people saw bazooka gums and wanted to see if a similar gum would hold in Turkey. It was a risky decision at the time as its always difficult to change habits of decades. But we are talking about kids , not adults, and they loved tipitip and didnt care if he was on a card or a wrapper. So there is a possibility that kent started with just 20 wrappers as a market test. After seeing the popularity 21-70 were added and sold together maybe.

-We dont see any inscription change from 20 to 21. (but no change from 70 to 71 either..)

Who knows. One can never be certain. The people i have talked can be wrong. Of course there are other possibilities: maybe Kent people were sure of the success of the gum and the first serie was even 1-100..!

The only way to know is maybe to ask the artist (Bulent Arabacioglu). If i can find his email i will try to ask him. If i get an answer i will post here.

I wouldn't try to contact Kent though, as some of you know Kent people seem to be snobbish and dont bother to answer or talk to anybody if they think no money is involved.
